The Rose of Jericho Resurrection Plant (Selaginella lepidophylla) is traditionally worked with in folk magic and conjure for prosperity, abundance, protection, renewal, blessing, and bringing new life or movement to something that has become stagnant. Your Rose arrives naturally dried and curled and gradually unfurls when its base is placed in shallow water. You will receive ONE individual Rose of Jericho, with natural variations in size, shape, and color.

In our folk practice, we generally work with Rose of Jericho in shallow water for 2–3 days, allowing the plant to open while prayers, intentions, or other workings are performed. When the working is complete, remove the plant and allow it to dry completely back into its curled, dormant state before working with it again.

Don't throw away the water. Rose of Jericho water can be incorporated into prosperity and money work, floor washes, blessing work, and threshold or doorway work, or used to dress appropriate ritual objects. It can also be returned to the earth and used in your garden or around outdoor plants, particularly with intentions of growth, abundance, renewal, or prosperity.

A Little Rose of Jericho History

The plant commonly sold and worked with as Rose of Jericho in American folk and conjure practice is Selaginella lepidophylla, also known as Resurrection Plant and botanically as False Rose of Jericho. It is a different species from Anastatica hierochuntica, the Middle Eastern and North African plant traditionally called the True Rose of Jericho.

The word “false” does not mean fake or an improper plant for folk practice. Folk names don't always correspond exactly with botanical taxonomy. Selaginella lepidophylla, native to Mexico and the southwestern United States, became established under the Rose of Jericho name in American folk and conjure practice and within the spiritual-supply trade.

And this little plant earned the name Resurrection Plant for good reason. Selaginella lepidophylla can survive extreme dehydration in a dormant state and become physiologically active again when water returns. Its extraordinary ability to seemingly come back to life makes its traditional associations with renewal, resilience, prosperity, and new beginnings particularly fitting.

Longer workings, including seven-day workings, exist within different traditions, but seven days in water is not required. Avoid keeping your Rose continuously wet for extended periods, as prolonged moisture and stagnant water can encourage mold and deterioration.
